Where to Begin?

Hello Lovelies,

It has been awhile. You will have to forgive me, I did after all move to a whole new country! So many new and interesting things have happened in just a few short days. I guess though, I should start with the flight. I left Atlanta at 10:40pm on Tuesday. My bags were at 49 and 50lbs respectfully. Which means, I only had to pay for an extra checked bag! Atti's US papers were briefly looked over, and after $200.00. We were free to go on our way. Saying goodbye to my parents was really hard, but honestly I was really excited so I did not get as emotional as I probably should have. But, I miss them already!

Going through security was interesting, Atti had to come out of his carrier and I had to carry him through security. He was on a leash but honestly, he was such a good boy he didn't need it. Even the TSA agent said, "what an experienced little traveler, and I said, "no ma'am, his first time. He is just the best boy ever." The man behind me was nice enough to help hold the carrier open, so I could get him back in. Without me even asking, oh the kindness of strangers. I got to my gate, but sat at another, so no one could see Atti. People tend to freak if they see an animal. I gave him a sedative and we got on the plane. He barely fit under the seat! I gave him some water and checked on him to make sure he was okay. He didn't make a peep the entire time. He also didn't drink anything.or use the bathroom. My flight landed at noon, a full hour early, which was great but Loek wasn't supposed to meet me until 1:45pm. There was no line at security, it was a breeze. I tried to call Loek, but my phone wouldn't work inside the airport. For those of you who have never been to Schiphol, there are several places for arrivals to come out. You look on a board by time to see which one the arrivals are coming out of.

By 1:20pm, my flight was no longer listed. I found a pay phone and tried to dial Loek. Every combination I tried, didn't work. I went to the help desk and asked how to make a call. They looked at me like I was dumb then told me to dial 0 not the country code.  Alright, I know silly. I got his voicemail. Finally I found him! After wondering around with all my luggage in a car and Atti on my shoulder. I was so relieved, For a second, I thought maybe he forgot about me! But, he didn't and it was fantastic seeing my guy standing there.

Well, that's how I got here, I'll update you on the rest a little later!

Atti Went to the Vet!

I've written quite a bit about my preparations for Atti's move with me to The Netherlands. This is because, it is quite a process and there is not too much online that makes it really easy. Last Saturday, Atti and I went to our USDA approved vet to have his European Microchip put in, as well as his rabies shot. I wrote a post about where to find a Euro Microchip, for those of you who are interested. You have to get a rabies shot either after or at the same time as the microchip insertion. I took Atti in a different carrier because I did not want him to associate his Sherpa bag with a negative experience.

Atti, was great. The vet said he was a fantastically behaved kitty, which of course I knew. The Euro 998 form was filled out and now I just have to send it into the Georgia USDA office to get it signed. Also, because he is flying with me and not below, he can be sedated. Which is awesome for everyone. It means he can go to sleep and wake up in Holland. The other passeng intereers wont be bothered either. Everyone will be a lot happier.

Atti did not want to get back into the carrier after his ordeal, so he crawled into my purse. He was so cute and comfy that I just carried him out that way. It is such a relief to have Atti, unlike myself, almost ready to go.

Preparation Tuesdays- Atticus Edition 1

I am bringing my cat to The Netherlands with me. His name is Atticus, he just turned a year old and he thinks I am his mother. Not in the normal way that people claim their pets are like their children. You see, I got Atticus when he was very young, too young in fact to be away from his mother.

I found Atti on Craigslist, yes I know, I should have gone through the ASPCA or Humane Society, but really I just skipped a step. Atti was up in Braselton, a good hour away from Atlanta on a good day. I drove up after work to see this kitten when he was about 5 weeks old. I feel in love and was told that they would hold Atti for me until he was old enough to be away from his mother. ( His mother was a stray cat that had her kittens in the peoples bush). I had just made it to my exit when I got a call, saying that the kittens were being taken back into the woods by their mom and that they had managed to grab Atticus, if I wanted to come back and get him.

I drove all the way back to Braselton, stopping along the way to get some cat milk substitute at the pet store and a syringe,(he wasn’t on solid food yet) I came home on my lunch break everyday for 2 weeks to feed him his fake milk in wither the syringe or in a bottle. You can see why Atti thinks of me as his mommy.

When I decided to move to Holland as opposed to having Loek move to the States, Atti was a huge factor. I could not imagine leaving him, but I did not want him to have to be quarantined for 30 days. Luckily, there are ways to get him to the country without having to do that process.

If you are planning on moving a pet. Your first call should be to the Consul of the Country you are planning to move to. They can provide you with the necessary forms you need to have completed by an USDA accredited vet.( It would also be a good idea to ask about any fees you will have to pay at customs for your pet, thank you Holland for being 0!) The Netherlands requires an EU Form 998 Veterinary Certificate. Atti will have to get a rabies shot as well as a few more vaccines and a microchip. This has to been done 90 to 21 days before we depart. Be sure to check the specifics for where you are moving. You then have to get the form certified by the USDA. You should send this in at least 2 weeks before departure.

After looking into what is required to bring your pet over by the country you are choosing to move to,you should then start looking into what airlines will actually transport your pet over. For me, I did not want Atti to have to transfer planes, so I choose to go with either Delta or KLM, as they were the only ones to offer a direct flight from Atlanta. In the end, I chose to go with KLM, even though really they have a partnership with Delta, so it isn’t a huge deal. I choose KLM because they are in charge of pets at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, and also because they had the best flight time. I will be landing in Amsterdam at 1:05 pm , local time on October 5th.

The last thing that you have to decide, is where to keep your pet on a flight. I debated for a long time about where to keep Atti, with me or in the cargo. In the end, I decided that with such a long flight, Atti, myself, and the other passenger's would be happiest if he was not in the cabin with us. You see, I was on an hour long flight on my way back from Philly after my layover from Amsterdam and there was a dog on the flight. Worst flight of my entire life. I also have to purchase an airline approved car carrier.

So far, I have not gone through the process of getting Atti moved, but I will keep you updated as I move through the steps.

Yes, that is my fiancee in the picture, and no, Atti is not actually that huge!
