About A Peach

Hi I’m Kaitlin! Welcome to A Georgia Peach Abroad, a blog about my journey trying to make my way in my newly adopted country of The Netherlands as well as stories of travel. I live here with my verloofde, Dutch for fiancee who I call The Verlo- for blogging purposes. While I love almost everything about my new home, there are some challenges that come along with living in a new culture. These are my stories- please read in your best Law and Order voice.

There are some questions that inevitably come up from readers, here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked.

Q. What are you doing in The Netherlands?:
A. I moved here to be with my dutch fiancee. Immigration here was much easier than the US and I have wanted to move to Europe since I was 11. For us it was a no brainer. After a lengthy job search, I am now back in school studying International Tourism Management.

Q. Don’t you miss your home?:
A:
This question assumes that I don’t think of The Netherlands as my home. I guess you mean do I miss the States. The answer requires some explanation, I miss my friends and family and some of the food of my native America. But, I never really felt like I belonged there. It might have been different if I had grown up in a different part of the country than the South, but my views are much too liberal to feel comfortable in the Bible Belt.

Q. Do you speak Dutch?:
A.
I try really hard, but it is coming slowly! It doesn't help that I have to learn Spanish for my studies.

Q. Do you live in Amsterdam?:
A.
We live in the 4th largest city in The Netherlands called Utrecht, it is very central in The Netherlands and has a rich history. But I can get to Amsterdam in about 30 minutes by train, and it is where one of my greatest expat friends lives and I'm there four times a week for school.

Q. When are you getting married?:
A.
Your guess is as good as mine. Things are very different here in The Netherlands. Lots of people move in together, have kids, and then get married way on down the line. There is very little societal pressure to walk down the aisle. I like it this way.

Q. What do you do in your spare time?:
A.
I cook and bake a lot, I explore the countryside, I watch way too many movies and tv shows, I hangout with friends, and I read an unfathomable amount.
